About the Liverpool Archaeology Field School

The Liverpool Archaeology Field School (LAFS) takes place every year during July and August, and is located at Penycloddiau Hillfort (Flintshire), which is the largest hillfort in Wales (an incredible 21 ha). At 440 m above sea level, it is only the third such site to see excavation in the region.
Liverpool’s Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology is working in partnership with Cadw (the heritage arm of the Welsh Assembly Government) and with Denbighshire County Council, aiming to understand the history of the hillforts along the Clwydian Range - who built these extraordinary monuments, when, and most importantly: why?
Our research is also working in partnership with University of Oxford’s excavations at Bodfari Hillfort, with the results of both excavations contributing to a much broader understanding of the prehistoric occupation of the Clwydian Range, and beyond.
